ReGear

Visit Wairēinga / Bridal Veil Falls near Raglan: upper viewpoints or a steep walk to the base, realistic return times, road access and aerial maps.

Wairēinga / Bridal Veil Falls plunging into its forested pool near Raglan.

Wairēinga / Bridal Veil Falls offers two quite different outings: a short forest approach to the upper viewpoints, or a longer descent for the full view from below. The waterfall drops 55 metres into a rock amphitheatre.

Quick facts

  • Top viewpoints: allow 20 minutes return. The full walk to the base is roughly 1.5 km return, estimated from DOC’s mapped track.
  • Base: another 10 minutes down from the top; allow 40 minutes or more for the full return, plus stops.
  • The lower section has steep stairs, with the climb back at the end.
  • Currently unsuitable for wheelchairs; no swimming, climbing or abseiling.

Getting to the start

From SH23, take Te Mata Road. Turn left onto Kawhia Road about 1 km past Te Mata, then continue roughly 4 km to the car park. Organise water and a toilet stop before leaving town.

The walk, step by step

  1. Follow the Pakoka River through native forest to the upper viewpoints.
  2. Decide whether the group wants the steep descent. Turning back here is a worthwhile shorter walk.
  3. If continuing, use the stairs past the midway viewpoint to the lower bridge and information shelter.
  4. Return up the same stairs and forest path.

Effort and conditions

The descent makes the falls feel close; the return is the part to allow energy for. Pause before getting tired and keep your hands free for support. DOC’s current notice says weather damage has affected wheelchair suitability.

What I would bring

I would bring comfortable grippy shoes, water and a waterproof layer. A small pack is easier to manage than carrying loose bags on the stairs.

Planning your return

Water quality is unsuitable for swimming. Enjoy the pool from the viewing area, then leave time for the uphill return and the drive. Check the live DOC page before travelling.
