Before you fish in NZ: check area, species and current rules

ReGear

Check NZ recreational sea-fishing rules by area and species, using the official app for size limits, catch limits and closures.

Before recreational sea fishing in New Zealand, check the current rules for the area and species you intend to catch. A limit remembered from another coast or last summer may not apply.

Use a repeatable rules check

  1. Identify the fishing area accurately.
  2. Confirm the species, using identification images if needed.
  3. Read the applicable minimum size and daily limit.
  4. Check method restrictions and closed areas.
  5. Look for temporary closures before the trip.

Use the official fishing-rules app

MPI's NZ Fishing Rules app provides species information, size and daily limits, and area restrictions. Its closures and restrictions section helps you check changes before fishing. Open the relevant area information while you have reception and make sure the app is current.

Prepare the practical bits too

Carry a suitable measuring tool and know the measurement method for the species. Keep the official information easy to reach so everyone in the group can check it. If identification or the applicable rule is unclear, resolve that before keeping a catch. For a first outing, I would choose a straightforward permitted location and go with someone experienced. These are recreational marine-rule checks; do not use them as a substitute for the separate rules that apply to freshwater fishing. Check weather and shore access as carefully as catch rules.
