The new backcountry hut partnership: what changes now?

ReGear

DOC and the Backcountry Trust have announced a new agreement to work together. It does not decide the future of individual huts.

There’s a new step in the work to look after New Zealand’s backcountry huts and tracks. A 11 September announcement sets out a Memorandum of Understanding between DOC and the Backcountry Trust.

This MOU is non-binding. It does not transfer DOC’s responsibilities, decide what happens to individual huts or tracks, or change their management immediately.

What happens next

The stated goal is a national operational agreement by the end of 2026. The work is intended to explore a sustainable future for parts of the network, drawing on volunteers, communities and contractors. The announcement also refers to $4.2 million in visitor-levy funding since 2024; that is not described as a fresh $4.2 million payment made this September.

For your next trip, don’t read this as an opening notice, a closure notice or a change to a particular hut’s booking rules. Check the individual destination as usual.

Why it belongs in the Journal

At ReGear, keeping useful things in use is a big part of the point. The same interest makes the upkeep of huts and tracks worth following: the places we head to need looking after as much as the kit we carry.

For now, the official announcement is clear about both the intention and its limits.

For the gear side of your next trip, our second-hand outdoor gear checklist explains the condition and fit checks worth making before buying.
