Duder’s Sustainable Trail is a quieter mix of wetland edges, working farmland and regenerating coastal forest. Choose it for an unhurried walk with changing scenery and room to notice the smaller details.

What to expect

Most of the challenge comes from the ground underfoot. Grass and earth can become muddy, and there are small stream crossings and uneven sections. In the bush, look for nīkau, pūriri and regenerating trees rather than expecting one big summit viewpoint.

Getting ready

Public toilets are listed at the park. Bring your own drinking water and lunch. Dogs are not allowed. Keep your distance from cattle and sheep, and leave gates as you found them.

Before you go: Follow the yellow trail markers: the park has several other walking routes.

What to bring

For a damp day I’d choose walking shoes or boots with good grip, plus a spare pair of socks for afterwards. Water, a light raincoat and a snack are enough to make a slow circuit comfortable. Keep an offline map available at track junctions.

Choosing gear for this walk

For damp grass and muddy sections, start with tread condition and fit. Waterproof footwear may help with wet vegetation, but it will not prevent a slip or keep water out if it runs in over the top. Put spare socks and an extra layer in a waterproof pack liner; check a used pack’s shoulder-strap stitching and buckles before loading it.
