Flora monitoring returns an encouraging predator-control result
DOC reports one rat across 1,342 trap boxes checked in Flora after winter predator control. The result is a monitoring snapshot, not a pest-free guarantee.
A recent trap check in Kahurangi National Park’s Flora area has returned an encouraging result: Friends of Flora volunteers found one rat across 1,342 trap boxes checked, according to DOC’s 15 September update.
The result in context
DOC says the rat was in a toxin-exclusion area near a hut. Separate July tracking-tunnel monitoring across the wider area recorded no rodent detections.
The checks followed an aerial predator-control operation in late June, after a heavy beech-seed season increased the risk of a predator surge. DOC describes the work as part of the protection of native wildlife in the area.
What the numbers can tell us
Ongoing monitoring will show how the results hold up. Maintaining the trap network remains an ongoing job.
