Goat Island parking charges are planned for December
DOC is aiming to introduce Goat Island parking charges in December 2026, with pricing due in October. The fee is not confirmed in the announcement.
If Te Hāwere-a-Maki / Goat Island is on your summer list, keep an eye on parking arrangements. DOC is aiming to introduce charges in December 2026, but its announcement does not yet give a final price.
What is confirmed so far
DOC announced the plan on 3 August. It says final pricing is due to be released in October, following local feedback, and that the local catchment for annual permits is being worked through.
The stated aims include managing pressure on the parking areas and supporting conservation.
What to check before a summer visit
Wait for the published charges before budgeting an exact parking cost. Check the final start date, how payment works and whether any permit actually applies to you. Don’t assume a local permit will cover every visitor travelling from nearby.
Keep the outing flexible
Our suggestion is to recheck arrangements close to your visit and have a realistic alternative if the site is busy or conditions change. Sort the practical details before putting everyone in the car.
