Great Taste Trail: Wakefield-area closures to plan around this spring

ReGear

Most of Tasman’s Great Taste Trail is open, but Wakefield-area closures and Quail Valley Road detours affect spring ride planning.

Tasman’s Great Taste Trail remains mostly open, but riders planning the Wakefield area need to allow for closures and road detours. The trail operator’s 18 September update says about 90% of the trail is available.

The sections to check

  • Quail Valley Road closed from 15 September, with reopening expected in early October.
  • Wakefield to Wai-iti remains closed and needs a full reroute, expected to take 18–24 months.
  • Work continues between Wai-iti Domain and Quail Valley Road, with late October 2026 the hoped-for reopening.
  • Motueka Westbank Road has reopened with stop/go traffic control.

Plan around the closure

The operator lists a 23 km road detour via Eighty Eight Valley Road and Wai-iti Valley Road, plus a shorter SH6 option with fast traffic and trucks. For less confident riders, arranging transport around the gap is a better planning starting point than assuming the shortest detour suits everyone.

Check the live trail notices before booking shuttles or choosing a daily distance. Reopening dates are targets; closure signs on the ground still apply.
