Hūnua Traverse: northern section now closed on weekdays

ReGear

Hūnua Traverse’s northern section has weekday forestry closures from 14 September. Check weekend access and southern-section options before riding.

The northern Hūnua Traverse has returned to weekday closures for forestry harvesting. The change took effect on 14 September 2026, so an end-to-end weekday ride is no longer the standard option.

What is open

  • Northern section, Clevedon to Upper Mangatawhiri Valley: weekends and public holidays.
  • Southern section, Upper Mangatawhiri Valley to Kaiaua: remains open seven days, including Mangatangi Hill and the campgrounds.

Where the restriction applies

The harvesting closure runs from Plows Road to the top of Waterline Road. The operator also tells visitors to avoid Ness Valley / Moumoukai Hill Road during weekday harvesting because of logging trucks.

Before planning your ride

Choose a weekend or public holiday for the full traverse, and check the operator’s latest status before leaving. Weekday riders should use the published alternate-access information rather than trying to bypass a closed gate.

The full Clevedon–Kaiaua route is about 44.5 km and includes steep climbing. Allow for your group’s pace and transport at the far end. See the closure notice and operator’s map before deciding on a route.
