Kura Tāwhiti / Castle Hill: walking among Canterbury’s limestone rocks
Plan the 1.7 km Kura Tāwhiti loop at Castle Hill: about 40 minutes among limestone outcrops, with parking, toilets and useful visitor guidance.
Kura Tāwhiti is a short walk with a big landscape: pale limestone towers, open grassland and mountain backdrops. It suits a scenic stop on SH73, with time to wander the formed route rather than rush through.
Quick facts
- About 1.7 km loop; allow 40 minutes plus stops.
- Gravel track with steeper parts and steps.
- Signed SH73 car park, about 90 minutes from Christchurch.
- Toilets available; no drinking water. No dogs.
Entrance and getting there
From Christchurch, the signed turn-off is on the left about 3 km before Castle Hill Village. Parking is free, including spaces for campervans. Use the car park rather than stopping on the highway when it is busy.
Location and route maps

Orange highlights show the mapped walking paths. Use DOC’s current track page and map for alerts and trip planning.
The walk, in order
- Follow the gravel access track across the open ground towards the limestone outcrops.
- Continue on the marked loop through the rocks, taking the steps where the route climbs.
- Follow the loop back to the access path and car park.
What to expect
The distance is short, but this is not a completely level paved stroll. Wear shoes with grip and slow down on wet gravel or steps. The exposed setting makes a warm layer useful even when the car park feels mild.
What I would bring
I would bring a windproof or waterproof layer, water and a charged phone. Have snacks at the shelter or car park: DOC asks visitors not to eat or drink among the rocks.
Facilities and the return plan
This is a significant place for Ngāi Tūāhuriri. Stay on formed tracks, protect small plants and never mark or damage the limestone. Phone reception is unreliable, so save your onward directions before arriving.
Another outing to consider: Devils Punchbowl near Arthur’s Pass.
