Lake Daniell: plan the forest walk and lakeside hut visit
Plan Lake Daniell from Marble Hill: 8.4 km each way, roughly six hours return, with a route map, hut booking details and packing advice.
At a glance
- Distance: 8.4 km one way; about 16.8 km return.
- Walking time: about 3 hours each way, plus stops.
- Track: well-formed forest track; a substantial day’s walking.
- Start: Marble Hill Campsite, near Springs Junction.
Find the start
Marble Hill Campsite is about 5 km east of Springs Junction on SH7. Turn onto the gravel access road and continue several hundred metres to the shelter on the left. The walking track begins there. Arrange your own return transport to this same road end.
Follow the route
- Marble Hill to the Sluice Box. Enter the trees and cross the Maruia River gorge on the bridge.
- Follow the Alfred River valley. Continue through red beech forest on the established track.
- Reach Lake Daniell. The track ends at the lakeside Kōhanga Atawhai – Manson Nicholls Hut. Return the same way, or stay with a confirmed hut booking.

Effort and facilities
The formed track is inviting, but the return distance is the main challenge. For a first longer walk, practise a similar distance before committing to the full day. Start early and set a turnaround time that leaves daylight for the walk out.
The 20-bunk hut has rainwater, heating and camping space nearby. Overnight hut stays require a booking; spaces are not held for people who turn up. Bring your own stove, sleeping bag and toilet paper if staying. Carry drinking water and a treatment method for refills.
What I would bring
I would take a waterproof jacket, warm layer, lunch and spare food, headtorch, first-aid kit and offline map. For this longer outing, I would carry a distress beacon and leave a clear return plan with someone at home. Comfortable footwear matters more than saving a few grams.
Before you go
No mountain biking. Wasps can be common from December to April. Stay on the public Lake Daniell route; the Station Creek/Sherriff River access beyond the lake is private. Check DOC’s current notices and your hut booking before leaving.
