Work starts on 5 October

Riders on the Lake Ōhau Lodge–Ōmarama section of Alps 2 Ocean should watch for wallaby-search operations from 5–23 October 2026. The work covers public conservation land around Freehold Creek, Lake Ōhau and Quailburn Road.

Environment Canterbury says contractors will work in daylight with dogs and will carry firearms. The search follows a wallaby being destroyed in the area in July; the aim is to check for any others. Work may finish before 23 October.

What to do on the trail

  • Read the latest trail notice before riding this section.
  • Obey warning signs and instructions from contractors.
  • Allow flexibility in your day if on-site instructions affect your progress.

The notice gives instructions for passing through the area; it does not announce a blanket closure of the entire cycle trail.

Check the section you are actually riding

Alps 2 Ocean’s status page separates notices by trail section. Open Section 4 for this operation, then check the other sections included in your trip. Tell your support driver or riding group about any change to your day’s plan.
