Lake Sylvan: beech forest and mountain views near Glenorchy

ReGear

Walk to Lake Sylvan near Glenorchy: a 40-minute forest approach, mountain views from the platform and a longer tramline-loop return option.

Lake Sylvan with forest and the Cosmos Peaks beyond.

Lake Sylvan gives you a forest walk and a mountain-backed lake without heading high into the ranges. The viewing platform is the main destination; the tramline loop adds a different return through the bush.

Quick facts

  • Allow 40 minutes each way to the platform, or 1 hour 40 minutes for the tramline-loop outing.
  • The direct platform return is about 4.5 km, estimated from DOC’s mapped track.
  • Well-defined forest track across old moraine and river terraces.
  • Lake Sylvan car park is around 30 minutes’ drive from Glenorchy.

DOC route information and official map

What the walk is like

  1. Follow the signed forest track from Lake Sylvan car park.
  2. Continue through tall red beech forest towards the lake.
  3. Take the approach to the viewing platform for lake and mountain views.
  4. Return the same way, or follow the signed tramline loop to the shared approach.

Effort and conditions

Expect a bush walk rather than a smooth promenade. The lake is the reward, with glimpses of Pikirakatahi / Mount Earnslaw. Choose the direct return if your group is tiring.

Check DOC’s alerts before travelling and follow closure signs. Stay on the signed route rather than continuing onto a different backcountry track.

What I would bring

I would carry a rain jacket, warm layer, water, lunch and a headtorch in a small pack. Keeping a dry layer for the lake stop is more useful than dressing for how warm you feel while walking.

Before heading back

Use facilities before leaving Glenorchy and allow extra time for the drive, photos and breaks. Tell someone your plan and expected return. Pick the return option before leaving the platform so the group stays together.
