Legend of the Peaks adds a Whaka Ultra 50K for 2026
Legend of the Peaks returns to Rotorua on 6–7 November 2026, with a new Whaka Ultra 50K. Check the course and requirements before stepping up.
Updated 1 October 2026: Updated the distance and climbing figures from the current course listing.
Legend of the Peaks is scheduled for 6–7 November 2026 in Rotorua’s Whakarewarewa Forest. The new Whaka Ultra 50K adds another option for runners looking at the event’s longer distances.
What the new distance involves
The organiser’s detailed course listing puts the ultra at about 50.4 km with roughly 1,850 m of climbing across four peaks. That is useful context when comparing it with a flatter event of similar distance.
The wider weekend includes other distances. Choose a distance that matches your training.
Look at climbing as well as kilometres
Our suggestion is to read the full course description and current entry requirements before making this a goal. Consider the terrain you have actually trained on, your experience over longer days and the time available to prepare.
Check the organiser’s compulsory equipment and event instructions directly. A general trail-running kit list may leave out something specific to your chosen race.
Test what you will carry
Make sure your pack or vest works with the required load, rather than checking fit while it is empty. Try reaching food, water and an outer layer without unpacking everything.
If you’re shopping second-hand, our gear inspection guide helps you look beyond the brand name. Give any replacement item a proper trial before relying on it during the event.
