Mangapohue Natural Bridge: a limestone gorge walk near Waitomo
Visit Mangapohue Natural Bridge: a 700 m return walk beneath a limestone arch, boardwalk and steps, Te Anga Road access and real aerial maps.
Mangapohue is about looking up: the stream and boardwalk lead into a narrow limestone gorge beneath a 17-metre natural arch. It is an easy stop to pair with Marokopa Falls on a Waitomo day trip.
Quick facts
- About 700 m return along the same track.
- Allow around 20 minutes, with extra time to look around.
- Easy boardwalk approach, followed by steps beneath the arch.
- Start on Te Anga Road, about 25 km from Waitomo; no dogs.
Getting to the start
Use the signed reserve entrance off Te Anga Road. The first boardwalk section is pushchair-friendly, but the stepped continuation needs to be done on foot. Bring your own water and organise a toilet stop before the drive.

The walk, step by step
- Follow the boardwalk into the limestone gorge.
- Approach the natural arch above Mangapohue Stream.
- Use the steps for a closer view beneath the arch and back down the gorge.
- Retrace the track to the entrance. There is no public access into the neighbouring farm.
Effort and conditions
The walk is short, with its main change in effort at the steps. Take your time on damp timber and keep to the formed route. The arch is the remnant of an ancient cave system.
What I would bring
I would bring grippy shoes, a light waterproof layer and water. Keep cameras and phones secure while using the steps, and stop in a safe spot before taking photographs.
Planning your return
Return to the same car park and allow daylight for any further stops. Save the route information before travelling and check DOC’s current notice. Keep your visit inside the reserve boundary.
