Merino or synthetic base layers for NZ hiking?

ReGear

Compare merino and synthetic base layers for drying, odour and durability, with simple fit checks before your next outdoor trip.

Black long-sleeved technical base-layer top

A base layer sits against your skin and helps manage sweat. Merino and synthetic fabrics both work, but they feel and dry differently. Choose for your activity and comfort before choosing a brand.

Merino and synthetic at a glance

  • Merino: naturally resists odour and can be comfortable across several days, but usually dries more slowly than synthetic fabric.
  • Synthetic: typically dries quickly and is durable, although odour can build up.
  • Blends: combine fibres to balance comfort, durability and stretch.

Fit and thickness matter

A base layer should sit comfortably close to the skin without restricting movement. Thicker fabric adds warmth, but your insulating middle layer does much of the warming work. For a sweaty uphill walk, a lighter base can be easier to manage than starting in the thickest top you own.

Try it as part of the outfit

Wear it beneath your normal fleece and shell. Check the collar, cuffs and seams under pack straps, and raise your arms to see whether the hem rides up. I would prioritise a fabric that feels comfortable for a full day over a small difference in weight. With a used merino top, look closely for small holes and worn shoulder areas. Follow its wash label so shrinkage does not undo a good fit.
