Hiking
Pancake Rocks: a coastal loop at Punakaiki
Explore Punakaiki’s Pancake Rocks on a short paved loop. Plan around 30 minutes plus stops, with coastal views, blowholes and paid parking.
Pancake Rocks packs a dramatic coastline into a short outing. The paved loop leads through coastal vegetation to layered limestone, surge pools and sea views. Allow time at the viewpoints rather than treating it as a race around the circuit.
Updated 30 September 2026: Walking time updated to DOC’s current 30-minute estimate.

The walk, in order
- Follow the signed path from the entrance through the coastal vegetation.
- Take the loop past the limestone formations and viewing areas.
- Follow the formed return route to the entrance, keeping children close near the road.
What to expect
This is a short sightseeing walk, not a strenuous hike. The coastal setting can still be windy and wet. Blowholes are most active around high tide with a south-westerly swell; the rock formations and ocean views are worth seeing even without a big spray display.
What I would bring
Bring a rain jacket and shoes with grip. Keep phones and cameras secure near the viewpoints, and leave both hands free when helping children on steps.
Facilities and the return plan
Stay behind barriers and do not climb onto the rocks. Give yourself enough parking time for slow viewing stops. The nearby Truman Track is a separate short walk if you want more forest and coastline during the same day.
