Piroa Falls: a short gorge walk near Waipū

ReGear

Find Piroa Falls near Waipū: a short stepped gorge walk, limited gravel-road parking, a flood-prone bridge and accurate aerial route maps.

Piroa Falls dropping into a rocky pool in Waipū Gorge.

Piroa Falls is a small outing with a rewarding waterfall view, tucked into Waipū Gorge. The short distance is appealing, but the low river crossing makes weather an important part of the plan.

Quick facts

  • DOC lists about 200 m return and 5 minutes walking; allow longer for the steps and viewing.
  • Easy-to-intermediate short track, with steps, mud and slippery ground.
  • Limited parking beside a narrow unsealed road.
  • Do not cross the bridge when the river is in flood.

Getting to the start

Look for Waipū Gorge Scenic Reserve signs from SH1 on the northern side of the Brynderwyn Hills. Follow Waipū Gorge Road for about 6 km to the DOC sign and parking area. Park carefully without narrowing the road.

The walk, step by step

  1. Descend the steps through bush into the gorge.
  2. Check the river before the low concrete bridge. If water is over it, turn back.
  3. When conditions permit, cross the bridge and continue briefly to the falls.
  4. Return on the same track and climb back to the road.

Effort and conditions

The bridge can be submerged after heavy rain. A short walk is still worth postponing when the river is up. Keep children close and stay on the track around wet rocks.

What I would bring

I would take shoes with grip, a light rain layer and water. Keep a dry layer in the car if the weather is unsettled. Check the forecast before committing to the gorge road.

Planning your return

Plan supplies and a toilet stop in town before setting off. DOC lists dogs only with a recreational-access permit, so arrange that in advance if relevant. Take rubbish away and check the current track notice before travelling.
