Spa Park to Huka Falls: a riverside walk from Taupō

ReGear

Plan the Spa Park to Huka Falls walk: 3 km one way, riverside terrain, the County Avenue start, return transport, dog rules and real aerial maps.

White water pouring through the Huka Falls gorge on the Waikato River.

This walk follows the Waikato River from Spa Thermal Park to Huka Falls. It is a useful half-day outing from Taupō, with river views along the way and a powerful waterfall at the finish.

Quick facts

  • 3 km one way; allow about 1 hour 30 minutes.
  • Walking both ways makes roughly 6 km and 3 hours, plus stops.
  • Well-formed riverside track with cliff edges.
  • Walkers only; dogs must be kept under control.

Getting to the start

Use the Spa Thermal Park car park on County Avenue, off Spa Road in Taupō. Walk about five minutes downhill to the river and cross the Otumuheke Stream bridge. The route map begins at the riverside track.

Location and route maps

Orange highlights show DOC’s recorded track over real aerial imagery. Open a map for a closer look.

What the walk is like

  1. Head down from Spa Park to the river and cross Otumuheke Stream.
  2. Follow the signed walking track downstream beside the Waikato River.
  3. Keep to the path through the cliff-edge sections.
  4. Reach the Huka Falls area, enjoy the viewpoints, then return the same way or use transport arranged in advance.

Effort and conditions

The track is well formed, but the river is deep and fast flowing. Supervise children and give the edges space. Cyclists use the separate Rotary Ride; this walking route is not a shared bike trail.

What I would bring

I would bring comfortable walking shoes, water, food and a rain layer. For an out-and-back walk, leave enough energy and daylight for the full six kilometres rather than treating the falls as the end.

Planning your return

Arrange any one-way pickup before starting. DOC lists the Huka Falls car-park gates as closed from 5.30 pm to 8.30 am. Check current access and gate information before travelling, and organise toilet stops around your chosen start and finish.

  • Waitonga Falls: A mountain-forest and wetland walk above Ohakune for another day of a central North Island trip.
  • Taranaki Falls: A waterfall walk from Whakapapa with a mountain setting, rather than Taupō’s riverside scenery.
