Tamahunga summit walk: a steeper bush outing near Matakana
Tamahunga is the more demanding choice in this collection. The reward is a sustained climb through regenerating native forest, with glimpses of the surrounding country along the way.
| Route | About 5 km return from Omaha Valley Road |
|---|---|
| Walking time | About 3 hours return |
| Effort | Advanced tramping track; sustained climb and uneven ground |
| Start | Signposted car park on Omaha Valley Road, just before number 109 |
Where it is
Signposted car park on Omaha Valley Road, just before number 109.

Follow the route
- From Omaha Valley Road, follow the markers uphill across private farmland, using the stiles.
- At the bush edge, continue on the orange-marked ridge track towards the summit.
- Reach the summit and helicopter pad, then return by the same route to Omaha Valley Road.

What to expect
Allow roughly 1½ hours each way. DOC grades this as advanced, meaning rougher ground and more route-finding judgement than a formed park path. The summit is largely enclosed by forest; choose this walk for the bush and climb rather than a wide-open summit panorama.
Getting ready
Take your own food and water, and use toilets before arriving. Access crosses private farmland and dogs are prohibited. Stay on the marked route and close any gates you open.
Before you go: Other routes continue towards Rodney Road and Matakana Valley Road. They are separate through-walks with different transport needs; turn back the way you came for this outing.
What I’d bring
I’d bring supportive footwear with good tread, a raincoat, a warm layer, lunch and spare food. Save the route offline, carry a charged phone and tell someone your plan. For a first bush hike, choose one of the easier walks before attempting this climb.
