DOC has outlined the next stage of recovery after the late-2025 Tongariro fires, and is inviting the public to an open day in Raurimu on 16 October 2026.

Open-day details

  • Friday 16 October, from 10 am.
  • Blue Mountain Adventure Centre, Raurimu.
  • Check DOC’s announcement and linked Tongariro Facebook page for RSVP details.

What the recovery work involves

The fires affected more than 3,000 hectares. DOC’s 30 September update describes weed control, deer management and monitoring to support the area’s recovery. The programme is backed by $3.5 million from the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy over five years.

What visitors can do

Respect the restorative rāhui, keep to open marked tracks and stay out of burned areas. Clean boots and gear, and take rubbish away. Check the current notice for your specific walk before travelling; the open day is a chance to learn about the recovery work rather than explore the affected ground.
