Planning the Tongariro Northern Circuit this summer? Check your dates before locking in the rest of the trip. DOC’s 4 September update moves the new Oturere Hut and campsite opening to 18 December 2026, after poor weather held up construction deliveries.

DOC also says repairs to the fire-damaged Mangatepopo Track are on course for a mid-December reopening. That link matters because it restores the full circuit between Whakapapa Village and Mangatepopo Hut.

DOC says people with affected bookings will be contacted about changing their booking or receiving a refund. If your itinerary depends on an earlier Oturere stay, check your booking correspondence and confirm it with DOC.

Get the itinerary right first

Our take: sort the actual overnight stops before working through the gear list. A hut date changing can affect transport, leave and the rest of a multi-day booking. Having a confirmation for one night doesn’t settle the whole trip.

Once the dates work, lay out what you already own and check what needs repairing, borrowing or replacing. It’s easier to make sensible gear decisions against a real itinerary than a trip you’ve had to guess at.

Use the DOC announcement and its booking guidance as your starting point, then check DOC’s current route information and booking availability before making commitments.

If your itinerary calls for replacing any kit, our guide to checking second-hand outdoor gear covers condition, fit and the questions to ask before buying.
