Wenderholm Te Akeake: a gentle beach and estuary walk

ReGear

About 2 km circuit around the sandspit; about 30 minutes, or longer with stops. Gentle and mostly flat; grass, sand and some low rocks. Maps, start details and packing advice.

Te Akeake is the easy-going option for a coastal outing at Wenderholm. Walk towards the river mouth, enjoy the headland views and return under the trees without taking on the hill tracks.

Follow the route

  1. From the main car park, walk to the beach and head north towards the Pūhoi River mouth.
  2. Use the beach or grass beneath the trees to reach the sandspit end, staying away from the water’s edge at the river mouth.
  3. Return along the river-side parkland to the main visitor area, with an optional look at Couldrey House and Gardens.

What to expect

There is no single formed, signposted trail throughout. It is a relaxed walk across beach and parkland, with low rocks in places. Keep the walk flexible and use the grass when the shoreline is awkward.

Getting ready

Toilets, changing rooms and drinking water are at the main car park. Check current bus connections if arriving via Waiwera, and allow time to walk from the stop into the park.

Before you go: Strong tidal currents make the river mouth unsuitable for a casual swim. The boat-ramp pontoon is closed for repairs. A winter closure also affects part of the separate hill Perimeter Track, not this sandspit outing.

What to bring

I’d bring comfortable walking shoes, water, a sunhat and a light jacket for a breezy day. This is a good place to keep the plan simple: a gentle walk, a picnic and time under the pōhutukawa before heading home.

Choosing gear for this walk

Comfortable walking shoes with useful tread are a sensible starting point for the grass, sand and low rocks. Heavy tramping boots are not automatically a better choice for this gentle outing. Carry a light wind layer and keep your phone and spare layer inside a dry bag or waterproof liner if rain is possible.
