A camping checklist for your first NZ campsite stay

ReGear

Pack for your first NZ campsite stay with a clear checklist for sleeping, cooking, clothing and the facilities to confirm before leaving.

A good camping checklist starts with the campsite. A serviced site with a kitchen needs a different setup from a basic DOC site with a toilet and little else. Confirm the facilities first, then pack for sleeping, eating and staying comfortable when the weather changes.

Pack by job, not by gadget

  • Sleep: tent, complete poles and pegs, sleeping bag, insulated mat and pillow.
  • Cook: suitable stove and fuel, pot, lighter, utensils, food, drinking water and a way to treat water if needed.
  • Stay comfortable: warm layers, rainwear, spare clothes, sturdy footwear, sun protection and insect repellent.
  • Find things after dark: headtorch, spare power, toilet paper, first-aid kit, personal medicines and rubbish bags.

Do a five-minute departure check

Put the tent up before the trip, check the stove outdoors and test the lights. Save your booking confirmation and arrival instructions offline. Check whether the tap water is treated, whether rubbish must leave with you and whether the site has vehicle access.

Keep the first trip manageable

I would start with one or two nights somewhere close to home, with toilets and a straightforward arrival. Pack a simple first dinner together so it is easy to find. After the trip, note what you actually used before buying extra gear.
