Your first family camping trip: keep the setup simple
Plan an easy first family camping trip: choose a suitable campsite, practise the setup and keep arrival, meals and bedtime straightforward.
For a first family camping trip, easy logistics matter more than a remote location. Choose a short drive, a campsite with toilets and enough space to settle in, then leave room in the day for snacks, exploring and doing very little.
Practise the awkward bits at home
Pitch the tent together and check that everyone fits on their sleeping mats. Let children try their sleeping bags and torches. A garden practice night can reveal a noisy mat, uncomfortable pillow or confusing zip before you are away from home.
Make arrival simple
- Arrive with daylight to spare.
- Show everyone the toilets and agree boundaries around roads, water and neighbouring sites.
- Set up the sleeping area before starting a complicated meal.
- Keep a warm layer, snack and light accessible for each person.
Plan for the family you have
Bring familiar food and a few easy activities rather than filling the weekend with outings. Keep bedtime routines recognisable. Give children a small packing job, then have an adult check the essentials. I would choose a short walk with an easy turnaround over a long destination hike on the first morning. A dry change of clothes in a clearly labelled bag is more useful than another bulky toy.
