DOC hut passes, tickets and bookings: which do you need?
Understand DOC hut passes, tickets and bookings, including the October 2026 booking expansion and online backcountry tickets from November.
Updated 2 October 2026: Added DOC’s October booking expansion, serviced-ticket changes and the November online backcountry-ticket option.
A Backcountry Hut Pass, a hut ticket and a confirmed booking do different jobs. Work out which system your chosen hut uses before buying anything.
Start with the individual hut page
- Bookable hut: reserve the required night in advance. A pass only works where it is accepted, and you still need the booking.
- Non-bookable hut: places are generally first come, first served. Buy the appropriate tickets or eligible pass before the trip.
- Special systems: Great Walks and some other huts have separate fees or exclusions.
What a pass does not do
A pass is a payment option for eligible huts, not a reserved bunk across the network. Check the current exclusions and how to enter pass details when booking. Ordinary hut tickets cannot replace a booking at a hut that requires one.
More huts now need bookings
DOC’s 1 October announcement adds 62 huts and campsites to its booking system: 30 opened for bookings in September for October stays, and another 32 opened on 1 October for stays from 1 November. Check your chosen hut’s page before travelling.
All DOC serviced huts are now bookable. Serviced Hut Tickets are being retired; contact DOC about applying an existing physical ticket to a booking before its expiry date.
Online hut tickets from November
DOC says tickets for non-bookable backcountry huts will be available through its online booking system from 1 November 2026. A ticket pays the applicable hut fee; it does not reserve a bunk in a non-bookable hut. Check the individual hut’s payment requirements and save your proof before leaving reception.

The standard Backcountry Hut Ticket remains $15 per adult per night. Save or print the online confirmation. Existing physical Backcountry Hut Tickets remain accepted until 1 November 2027.

Save the useful proof
Keep your confirmation, pass or tickets accessible and readable without reception. Compare the cost of your actual itinerary with the current pass price, rather than buying a pass because the trip has several nights. Include campsites and transport separately in the budget. Before leaving, check whether your route has a suitable backup if a non-bookable hut is full, and carry the gear that backup requires.
