Huts
Your first DOC hut night: what to bring and how it works
Know what to bring for your first DOC hut night, how shared facilities work and the small habits that make the evening easier for everyone.
A DOC hut gives you shelter and a place to sleep, but it is not a catered lodge. The exact facilities vary, so check the hut page and pack as though the kitchen cupboards will be empty.
Bring your own essentials
Take your sleeping bag, food, cooking equipment, light, toilet paper and rubbish bags. Check the water supply and treatment advice. Do not assume there will be gas, utensils, bedding or a warm fire when you arrive.
Settle in without taking over
- Follow the booking or first-come system for that hut.
- Fill in the hut book with your plans.
- Keep the cooking space clear and share tables and drying space.
- Use a quiet light once others are sleeping.
- Clean up and take your rubbish when you leave.
Make the evening easy
Pack dinner where you can reach it without emptying your whole bag. Keep dry sleeping clothes separate from wet walking gear. I would bring earplugs and have breakfast ready to find in the morning. Check the route out before bed, while everyone is still available to discuss the plan. For portable stove use, follow the stove's outdoor-only instructions and the hut's rules; a porch or enclosed room is not a safe substitute for open air.
