Hiking
Fantail Falls: a short waterfall stop on the Haast Highway
Find Fantail Falls on the Haast Highway: a short return walk, riverbank views, nearby toilets, what to bring and real location and route maps.
Fantail Falls is an easy place to stretch your legs between Wānaka and Haast. A short bush path opens onto the riverbed, with the waterfall spreading across the rock face opposite.
Quick facts
- About 200 m return; roughly 5 minutes walking, plus viewing time.
- Short, easy bush approach; uneven gravel by the river.
- Return to the same SH6 car park.
- No dogs.
Getting to the start
Use the signed car park on SH6, about 85 km north of Wānaka. DOC lists the nearest toilets at Pleasant Flat Campsite, about 10 km farther north. Bring drinking water.

The walk, step by step
- Follow the short bush path from the parking area.
- Stop on the near side of the Haast River for the waterfall view.
- Retrace the path to the car park.
Effort and conditions
This is a roadside walk rather than a long hike. The gravel riverbed needs more care than the formed path. Keep children close and enjoy the falls without crossing the river.
What I would bring
I would keep grippy shoes and a rain jacket handy in the car. A small bottle of water and an extra layer make a relaxed stop easier when the weather changes.
Planning your return
Allow time to park and look around as well as walk. Save your next stop before leaving town, check current DOC notices and road conditions, and turn back if water or damage affects the approach.
