Haast Pass Lookout: a short climb to Southern Alps views

ReGear

Walk to Haast Pass Lookout: 1.5 km return, about an hour and 150 m of climbing, with parking, toilet planning, mountain views and real route maps.

Mountain views from the Haast Pass Lookout viewing platform.

Haast Pass Lookout is the step up from a quick waterfall stop: a steady climb through beech forest to an open mountain viewpoint. On a clear day, Mount Brewster is a highlight.

Quick facts

  • 1.5 km return on the same track; allow about an hour plus stops.
  • Around 150 m of climbing on a gravel track.
  • Easy-to-intermediate walking grade; expect an uphill effort.
  • No dogs.

Getting to the start

Start at the car park at the top of Haast Pass / Tioripatea on SH6, about 80 km north of Wānaka. The nearest toilets listed by DOC are at Cameron Flat Campsite, around 10 km south. Bring water.

The walk, step by step

  1. Find the signed lookout track at the pass car park.
  2. Climb through beech forest on the gravel path.
  3. Reach the viewpoint above the trees and look towards the surrounding Southern Alps.
  4. Return down the same track.

Effort and conditions

The distance is modest, but the climb raises the effort. Start slowly and choose a pace that lets the whole group keep together. The exposed viewpoint can feel colder than the forest.

What I would bring

I would bring a waterproof jacket, warm layer, water and a snack in a small pack. Shoes with good grip help on the descent. If cloud removes the view, the forest walk can still be worthwhile without pushing on in poor weather.

Planning your return

The Bridle Track starts across SH6 and is a separate, longer outing. This guide covers only the lookout return. Recheck the forecast and DOC notices, allow daylight for the descent, and take care around highway traffic.
