Long Bay to Grannys Bay: an easy-to-plan coastal escape
This walk leaves Long Bay’s picnic lawns for a ridge with sea views, then drops towards Grannys Bay. It is a useful first coastal outing if you want a clear turnaround and plenty of facilities back at the start.
| Route | About 3.4 km for the shorter coastal outing; return varies with tide and detours |
|---|---|
| Walking time | Allow about 1–1½ hours with stops |
| Effort | Moderate hills, formed paths and an optional rocky beach return |
| Start | Northern end of Long Bay Regional Park’s car park |
Where it is
Northern end of Long Bay Regional Park’s car park.

Follow the route
- Walk past the security chain at the northern car park and take the flat track left through fields and wetlands.
- Cross the bridge and climb through bush to the open ridge. A short side trip leads to the old pillbox lookout.
- Descend to Grannys Bay. Return on the inland track at high tide; use the beach-and-rock return only at low tide and in calm conditions.
Route map
The map shows the wider Coastal Track, which continues beyond this shorter Grannys Bay outing. Turn back at Grannys Bay for the route described here. Tap the map to enlarge it.

What to expect
The route has a proper uphill section before the views open out. The optional 100 Acre bush track adds distance and can be muddy. Make Grannys Bay your planned turnaround rather than following the longer coastal network north without checking your time.
Getting ready
Toilets, drinking fountains, picnic areas and a bus stop are in the main Long Bay parkland, not along this walk. Check Auckland Transport’s journey planner for your trip.
Before you go: Do not attempt the rocky shoreline return when waves or the tide cover the route.
What I’d bring
I’d take grippy shoes, water and a light raincoat, even if the beach looks warm at the start. I’d save a map and decide on the inland return before the tide becomes a problem. A small snack gives you a reason to pause at the lookout.
