How to wash and store a sleeping bag
Check sleeping-bag fill and care instructions before washing, choose the right cleaner and allow enough time for thorough drying.
Wash a sleeping bag according to its fill and care label. Down and synthetic insulation need different cleaning products, and a bag is not ready for storage just because the outer fabric feels dry.
Identify the fill first
Find the model and care label. Use a down-specific cleaner for down where recommended, or a suitable technical cleaner for synthetic fill. Avoid assuming ordinary laundry detergent or fabric softener is suitable. Check whether the maker permits machine washing and whether the machine has enough room.
Allow time for drying
Wet down needs patient drying to recover its loft. Use only the heat setting and method approved for the bag. Where the maker recommends drying balls, follow that guidance rather than adding them automatically. Check for damp clumps before packing it away.
A practical washing plan
- Inspect the bag and repair damage before washing.
- Read both the bag and cleaner instructions.
- Choose a day when you can complete the drying process.
- Support the wet bag carefully when moving it.
- Confirm it is thoroughly dry before putting it away.
If the label is missing, identify the bag before experimenting. Cleaning can improve a dirty bag, but it will not fix broken baffles or replace lost insulation. When buying used, check both condition and the temperature rating you actually need.
